SUMMER SWIM TEAM INFORMATION:

The Pomona Dolphins will again be competing in the A division of the Tri-County Swim league. Coach Tricia will be returning as Head Coach, along with assistants Kate Hafner and Kate Zoog. Karen has decided not to return for the 2008 season and she will certainly be missed but we are excited about having Kate Zoog join the Dolphin coaching staff. This season, Tricia and I are working to institute some changes in respect to attendance and practice times. In an effort to increase attendance for the older kids, we will be moving their practice time from a 7:15 start time to 8:30 and the 9 & 10 year olds will take the 7:15 slot. As always, consistent attendance at practice will be a requirement to participate in meets. Also, while we understand and encourage our swimmers to participate in year round USAA swimming, it does take it toll on team spirit and unity because they don’t always practice with the team. So, in effort to improve out team spirit, we will be requiring our swimmers who practice with other swim groups to perform other functions with the team. Details are not finalized yet, but some examples will be, helping with B-Meets, Organizing Friday night Pep rallies, and working on starts and turns with the younger kids. This is by no means meant to be viewed as a negative to our year round swimmers; we are simply looking to bring back the excitement and team unity that has always been part of summer swimming and the Pomona swim team. Below are the new practice times for the 2008 season:

Afternoon practice times (Pre-Season):

  12 & older: 4:30 – 5:30 (4:15 – 5:30 after the first week or so)

  • 11 & under: 5:30 – 6:15

Morning practice times:

  •   9 & 10s and 11 & 12s: 7:15-8:30 a.m.
  •   13 & older: 8:30 – 10:15 a.m.
  •   8 & under: 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.

As always, we will need plenty of help for the meets, especially the home meets. We will need timers and officials as well as lots of help to run our snack bar and clothing sales. There will be an official’s clinic offered again this year with time and place to be announced. These will be published in our Spring newsletter as well as on the web site. Please consider becoming an official for our meets, it’s a great way to get involved and learn more about the sport.

Registration for this year’s team will be on Tuesday, May 27th from 4 – 5:30. A team meeting (parents and swimmers) will be held that day at approximately 5:30 to discuss the changes and expectations for the 2008 season. Practice will begin Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the times shown above and continue every day after this date.

Our first swim meet this year will be on Saturday, June 21, 2008 and our season will continue until the conclusion of the Tri-County championship on August 7, 2008. Our first Wednesday night meet will be June 25, 2008. Competing in the “A” division again this year will be a real challenge, so please try to plan your vacations around the meets.

Last years team suit is not available for 2008, so I am looking for help in selecting the new suit. You can view the here and e-mail your choice to Swimming@PomonaSwimClub.org. There are 2 two year suits and 1 one year suit to choose from. If a two year suit is selected, that will be the team suit for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

The swim team will be again be organizing Pomona’s Swim for Heart, Swim-a-Thon which has been a great success every year. The date for this year will be July 13, 2008 with a rain date of July 20, 2008. This will be our 5th year for the event that has raised close to $20,000 for the American Heart Association and is always great fun for the whole family. Donna Geib will be this year’s chairperson and she will be looking for help and sponsors for the event. The T-shirts that are given every year are paid for with donations from generous sponsors, so if you would like to help with event or know of a potential sponsor, call Donna at 856- 786-0659. T-shirt sponsorship is available with $250 donation to the American Heart Association.

Summer 2008 looks to be another great year and we hope to have all of our 2007 swimmers return and to add to our talented roster with new swimmers.

Don’t forget to call and register for Spring warm-ups. We are always looking for new swimmers.

Pomona is always looking for new swimmers. If you know anyone who is interested, ask them to come out and give it a try.

Remember to schedule your vacation after the Tri-County Finals.

Any questions, call Paul Magness, 856-786-8596. Looking forward to seeing all of you!
